Student artwork created while in Mrs. Hughes' art classes.

On my first day of Mrs. Hughes’ art class, I remember feeling a bit overwhelmed because I actually had to take my own images for my projects, choose my own medium, and make sure it was completed by the due date. There were still so many things I didn’t know about art but Mrs. Hughes was the best mentor I could have ever had. She introduced me to so many new mediums and styles of art that had been completely foreign to me before. I took all of the advice that she offered and grew so much because of it. I made it to State VASE twice with her help and even got a Gold Seal my freshman year! I never could have imagined that was possible, and I don’t think it would’ve happened if it weren’t for Mrs. Hughes. If there’s any advice I could give to her future students, it’s to listen to her ideas. Even if you don’t think they’ll work for you, like I thought many times, there is something valuable in every recommendation she makes. You’ll always miss a shot you don’t take!

In 7th and 8th grade, I got hundreds just for drawing mockingjays and Harry Potter. When I got to 9th grade, I was honestly terrified when I heard we had to create fully original pieces. When I look back on it now, I am so glad that Ms. Hughes was there to tell me to knock it off with the fan art. Though I am disappointed I wasn’t able to explore my own cartoony style, it helped me significantly improve my art style. In 9th grade, I was able to go to State VASE with Ms. Hughes’s help and I am so glad that I had the opportunity. I learned a lot about color theory, contrast, shading, and about the kind of art I like to do. If I could take an art class like the one I had in 9th grade again, I would definitely do it over and over again.

A few words of advice for newcomers: when someone says they “hate you,” after you show them your art, just know, that means you’re really freaking good. Also, do try new mediums and try drawing multiple subjects. When you excel at multiple art mediums and subjects, it’ll really get people to say, “I hate you.”

Mrs. Hughes has taught me to reach out of my comfort zone, explore new mediums, and dare to be different. My style revolves around the beauty of texture and manipulating the eye to see multiple things from one piece of art. During my freshman year I fell in love with the stark contrast and values of graphite. During my sophomore year, I grew closer to the fluidity and ability to layer watercolors and ink. During my junior year, I hope to explore another medium.

The supply closet is like a wonderland. Just because something looks unfamiliar or foreign, don’t be intimidated. Explore! Try new things! You will always hear Mrs. Hughes say, “The average person spends around two seconds looking at a piece of art.” Motivate yourself to make them look longer. Make your art interesting, strangely captivating, confusing!

My goal as an artist is to baffle people. I want them to look at my art and have a million questions buzzing in their heads. Even if I don’t pursue art as a career, my future will always involve creativity. Art offers an endless variety of possibilities, and it’s up to us, as artists, to discover them.

I've been in Mrs. Hughes' class for two years as a freshman and sophomore. I would describe my style as realistic with a large focus on color theory. The best lesson I've learned so far is always heed your piers advice in hopes to perfect your own artistic goals.Advice I would give to incoming students is do not be shy to express yourself through your artwork, personality is an immense portion of what goes into a peice of artwork, giving it depth, and a reason for a interpreter to supply a peice more than a mere glance.I want to be a art teacher when I grow up because I was taught such incredible lessons through the artistic process that I feel it could make a life changing impact to those who need motivation to push themselves across boundary a they never believed they could. I owe the motivation that supply's my dreams to my teacher.Without her I would be completely lost.

I would describe my style as detail oriented as I really like realism. The best lesson I've learned so far is techniques- whether it's watercolor or pencil; This has helped me to learn how to experiment with my ideas and to really focus on the little things. (Ex. The different ways you shade with your pencil effects the quality of your final project)

Speak up! If you have a question, or you're stuck on something, ask about it! Whether you ask your fellow peers, or your teacher, you'll be glad you did! Also, when working on a new project, don't get so caught up in how far along everyone else is. Go at your own pace, but make sure you finish it!!

In the near or distant future, I'd like to do something that channels my inner creativeness. I love music and drawing, basically anything art related... At this moment in time, I'm honestly not sure what I want to do. But, if I could, I'd love to become a professional violinist or a really good artist..... Or find a way to ride my horse for a living.
